4 Points for Ball Striking in Pittsburgh PA (Private Coaching)

1. Plant Foot Placement

Your plant foot controls everything. Place your non-kicking foot beside the ball (roughly 4–6 inches away) with your toes pointed toward your target. Poor plant foot placement is one of the biggest reasons players miss shots or send the ball flying over the goal. Whether you're training at a local field in Pittsburgh or preparing for weekend matches, good ball striking starts before your kicking foot even touches the ball.

2. Contact Surface & Strike Location

Different parts of your foot create different results. Use the laces for power, the inside of the foot for accuracy, and understand exactly where you want to contact the ball. Striking through the center creates driven shots, while striking underneath creates lift. Many players focus only on kicking harder when improving the contact point usually makes the bigger difference.

3. Body Position Matters

Your body position determines where the ball goes. Leaning back usually sends shots high, while keeping your chest over the ball helps keep shots controlled and lower. Your arms also matter—they provide balance and stability during the strike. Even on a cold spring evening training somewhere around Pittsburgh, body position often separates consistent shooters from inconsistent ones.

4. Follow Through & Commitment

The strike is not finished when your foot hits the ball. A complete follow through helps create power, accuracy, and consistency. Players who decelerate or stop their leg early often lose both power and control. Think about driving throughthe ball rather than simply kicking at it.

These four things—plant foot, contact point, body position, and follow through—are usually where I’d start with almost every player before adding advanced shooting drills.
